Restrictions on tourism implemented by Gov. David Ige beginning in March such as the 14-day quarantine imposed on arrivals have resulted in dramatic success against the spread of the coronavirus, but the cost in lost tourism and other business has been catastrophic. The restrictions have left hotels empty and raised concerns that Hawaii will be slower to recover than the rest of the nation.

Puerto Rico Gov. Wanda Vazquez has delayed the resumption of tourism to Aug. 15 because of a resurgence of coronavirus cases that is traceable to the July 15 opening of the island to tourists from the US mainland. Among other measures, Vazquez ordered bars, casinos, gyms, marinas and theaters to close again until at least July 31.

The 112-room Tuxon from Marriott's Design Hotels boutique brand and the 12-room Edgartown Inn from Lark Hotels are among the new boutique and branded hotels that have just opened across the US. The Tuxon is in Tucson, Ariz., and the Edgartown Inn is on Martha's Vineyard.

A crisis offers a great opportunity to reinvent something that's stayed the same for decades, says Bill Barnett of the C9 Hotelworks consultancy, who'd like to see hotels flexible enough to change rooms with the seasons. "We've put bathtubs in living rooms, removed bathrooms, built in and then minimalized, but at the end of the day, all these years later it's just like hotel Lego, and there are still just four bloody walls and a bed," he writes.
